Maximizing Solar PV Utilization with Energy Storage in the Netherlands

A commercial site has deployed two Stars Series 289 kWh ESS Cabinets. By integrating battery storage with the site’s existing solar PV generation, the system is designed to maximize on-site solar utilization and unlock additional value from renewable energy. Like many businesses with solar PV, the site can generate more electricity than it consumes during periods of strong solar production. Without energy storage, this surplus electricity may be exported to the grid at relatively low rates, limiting its economic value.

 

Solution Highlights

The battery energy storage systems support three applications simultaneously:

  • Solar energy storage: Surplus solar generation is stored in the BESS and used later when electricity demand increases, improving self-consumption.
  • Energy market trading: The batteries can participate in energy markets when market conditions are favorable, creating an additional revenue stream.
  • DC fast charging: The system is prepared to supply a DC fast charger, enabling vehicles to be charged directly with locally generated and stored solar energy.

 

Customer Value

By combining solar energy storage, energy trading, and EV charging within one integrated solution, the project enables the site to make greater use of its own renewable generation.The BESS not only stores surplus solar power for later use but can also generate additional value through energy market participation when the site does not require the stored energy. With DC fast charging integration, the solution further supports the direct use of renewable energy for vehicle charging. Overall, the project demonstrates how C&I battery energy storage can go beyond peak shaving and backup power, helping businesses optimize solar self-consumption, participate in energy markets, and support renewable-powered mobility.
