C&I Solar + Energy Storage for Berry Cooling in the Netherlands

Project Overview

  • Location: Buren, the Netherlands
  • Scale: 125KW / 289 KWh

A berry-growing operation in the Netherlands has deployed Stars Series 289 kWh ESS Cabinet alongside a new solar PV system installed on its cold storage facility. Cooling fresh berries is highly energy-intensive, particularly during the summer months. When the refrigeration and irrigation systems operate simultaneously, the resulting high demand peaks can increase electricity costs and place additional strain on the site’s grid connection. By integrating solar PV with battery energy storage, the project enables the facility to make better use of its own renewable electricity while managing peak demand.

Solution Highlights

  • Solar PV integration: Solar power generated on the storage facility is used to support the refrigeration of fresh berries.
  • Peak shaving: BESS absorbs demand peaks when refrigeration and irrigation systems operate simultaneously.
  • Energy storage: Excess solar energy can be stored in the battery and used when on-site electricity demand increases.
  • Energy arbitrage: When battery capacity is available, stored energy can also be traded on the energy market to unlock additional value.

Customer Value

The integrated solar PV and energy storage solution helps the facility power its cooling operations with renewable energy while reducing peak demand at the grid connection. By combining peak shaving, energy storage, and energy arbitrage, the system improves solar energy utilization, helps manage electricity costs, and provides greater flexibility for energy-intensive C&I operations.
