A Dutch Dairy Farm Achieved Energy Security with Wenergy

The Start of This Story

In the Netherlands, a modern dairy farm home to 100 dairy cows and 40 young cattle relies on 24/7 power for two robotic milking systems and a heat pump. Seeking greater self-sufficiency ahead of the Dutch net-metering phase-out, the owner wanted to maximize their 72 rooftop solar panels. “Being dependent on a single energy stream makes you vulnerable,” Niek, the farm owner, explains.“Cows have a biological clock; if the robot stops, they fall out of their rhythm.”

Traditional diesel generators were ruled out due to high costs (~€7,500), fuel maintenance, and dangerous voltage spikes that could damage sensitive robotics. The farm needed a modern, seamless solution that could guarantee operational continuity without adding extra maintenance or operational risks.

“The battery is configured so that we charge during low-price hours and run on our own energy during expensive hours; whatever is left over, we trade,” Niek notes.
