A pig farming operation has deployed a Stars Series 289 kWh ESS Cabinet. The system stores surplus solar power generated during the day and makes it available to the farm at night, enabling greater use of its own renewable energy around the clock. Pig farming operations require a continuous power supply. Ventilation and climate control systems operate 24/7, while solar PV generation is naturally limited to daylight hours. Without energy storage, excess solar power generated during the day may be exported to the grid at a low rate, while electricity needs to be purchased again at night. The BESS bridges this gap by storing surplus daytime solar generation and supplying the stored energy when the farm’s electricity demand continues after sunset.

- Daytime solar energy storage: Surplus electricity generated by the solar PV system is stored in the 125 kW / 289 kWh BESS instead of being exported to the grid at a low rate.
- Nighttime energy supply: Stored solar energy is discharged at night to support the farm’s continuous electricity demand and reduce grid electricity purchases.
- Energy market participation: When available battery capacity remains, the system can also participate in energy markets to generate additional value.
Customer Value
The integrated solar PV and battery energy storage solution enables the farm to maximize the use of its own renewable electricity beyond daylight hours. By shifting surplus solar generation from daytime to nighttime, the BESS helps increase solar self-consumption, reduce reliance on grid electricity, and improve the economic value of on-site solar generation. At the same time, energy market participation provides an additional revenue opportunity, allowing the battery to deliver value even when the farm does not require its full storage capacity.
