Wenergy has successfully shipped its Stars Series industrial liquid-cooled energy storage systems (ESS) to Sierra Leone, marking another milestone in the company’s expansion into Africa’s renewable energy market. Scheduled for deployment by December 2025, this off-grid solar-storage solution will provide stable, efficient, and clean power to local mining operations, integrating seamlessly with existing photovoltaic (PV) systems.
Solving the “Energy Island” Challenge with Smart Microgrids
Many African mining sites are remote and disconnected from the national grid, relying heavily on diesel generators for electricity. This results in high operational costs, noise pollution, and carbon emissions.
Wenergy’s Sierra Leone project implements an off-grid hybrid solar-storage solution, combining PV, ESS, diesel generators, and mining load management under a smart Energy Management System (EMS). The system maximizes solar utilization, minimizes diesel consumption, and ensures reliable power supply while reducing overall energy costs. This scalable, modular approach supports low-carbon mining operations and sets a benchmark for future off-grid deployments in West Africa.

Proven Track Record Across Africa
Prior to Sierra Leone, Wenergy successfully delivered several landmark projects in Southern Africa:
Zimbabwe Mining Project: 24 MWh ESS integrated into a solar-diesel microgrid at a 700,000-ton/year lithium mine. Renewable energy accounted for over 20% of total power, reducing electricity costs to less than 1/20 of diesel-only generation.
Zambia Metallurgy Project: 3 MWp PV paired with 7.7 MWh ESS, using EMS for seamless power switching in 10 milliseconds. The system lowered total electricity costs to $0.15–0.25/kWh while reducing CO₂ emissions by approximately 1,200 tons per year.
These projects demonstrate Wenergy’s reliable, scalable, and cost-effective off-grid energy solutions for high-demand industrial applications.

Looking Ahead: Driving Global Decarbonization
From Zimbabwe to Zambia, and now Sierra Leone, Wenergy continues to expand its footprint across Africa with innovative energy storage and smart microgrid solutions. By delivering flexible, efficient, and sustainable power systems, Wenergy helps industrial clients reduce costs, enhance energy reliability, and achieve low-carbon operations, contributing to global zero-carbon targets.
